The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is once again sold out at multiple retailers following the Switch 2's June 5 launch. But if you're looking to pick up Nintendo's upgraded gamepad for TV mode, you can snag one for $85 at Target and Best Buy. The Switch 2 Pro Controller was in stock on launch day at Walmart, but the retailer sold through all of its units. GameStop is also sold out as of June 6.
Heads up: If you're looking to grab an extra pair of Joy-Con 2 Controllers, they are in stock at Walmart along with the Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip and Wheel Set. The Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip has built-in back buttons and costs $40, so it's a cheaper alternative to the Pro Controller if you're mainly interested in upgrading due to the remappable buttons.
The Switch 2 Pro Controller has a matte black finish with white triggers and shoulder buttons. The color scheme and matte finish gives it a slightly different look and noticeably different feel than the original's translucent plastic with textured handles.
Overall, the form factor is quite similar, though there are a few notable changes. The biggest additions are the back buttons, which can be remapped to any button input by holding down the Home button for a few seconds. Nintendo's new C button for GameChat was added between the right stick and D-pad, and you'll find a 3.5mm audio jack on the bottom.
Like the original, the new Pro Controller has a built-in gyroscope for motion controls, HD Rumble, and NFC support for Amiibo. Nintendo made improvements to the rumble motors, motion controls, and the analog sticks. Unfortunately, the sticks do not utilize Hall Effect sensor technology, but they do feel smoother and don't make as much noise.
The standout upgrades to the Pro Controller are also found on a pair of Switch 2 third-party controllers. Officially licensed Nintendo Switch 2 wired controllers by Hori and PowerA have remappable back buttons and the C button. Since both controllers are wired, they are substantially cheaper than the official option from Nintendo. The Horipad Turbo is $40 and is available now, while PowerA's Switch 2 Advantage Controllers start at $40 and launch in the coming weeks. Both controllers have Hall Effect sticks, and the options from PowerA come in four different color schemes, including two Super Mario-themed designs.
The Switch 2 Pro Controller isn't the only conventional wireless controller you can buy for Nintendo Switch 2. Along with first-party Nintendo controllers and officially licensed Bluetooth models from brands such as PowerA and PDP, the Switch 2 is backward compatible with some wireless controllers that aren't officially licensed by Nintendo.
We initially were unable to sync any 8BitDo wireless controllers to Nintendo Switch 2, including the recently released 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth Controller. But on the morning of June 6, 8BitDo released a firmware update that makes a handful of its controllers and accessories compatible with Switch 2. This is great news considering the 8BitDo Ultimate 2 Bluetooth is the best third-party controller for Nintendo Switch that we've used--you can read why below.
But first, here's a list of the wireless 8BitDo controllers that now work on Switch 2:
8BitDo also added support for its USB Adapter and USB Adapter 2, which allow you to sync a wide range of Bluetooth controllers to your Switch 2 that otherwise wouldn't be supported.
Other third-party wireless controllers that we've tested and have had success with so far:
Updated on June 6, 2025 to add details about 8BitDo controller compatibility.
Let's circle back to the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth, now that it works on Switch 2:
The Ultimate 2 has four remappable buttons--two back, two shoulder--adjustable trigger locks with two stopping points, TMR electromagnetic sensors (better than Hall Effect), RGB lighting rings, and robust customization features via 8BitDo's software suite on PC and Android. You can set up three custom profiles, modify stick and trigger sensitivity, create deadzones, alter rumble intensity, and set up different lighting effects/colors.
The Ultimate 2 Bluetooth comes with a matching charging dock that holds an optional USB-C dongle for 2.4GHz Wireless. It's unclear if the Ultimate 2 Bluetooth will work with Switch 2 via 2.4GHz Wireless, but Bluetooth and wired connections should be seamless.
